Accommodation
holidaymakers and business travellers to Gibraltar will find a good choice of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets, from ‘wild camping' to luxurious living on a five star superyacht hotel. Due to Gibraltar's small size and dense population, the accommodation choice may not be as vast as some similar sized Spanish holiday destinations, but with the relaxed passport control at the border with La LĂnea de la ConcepciĂłn, visitors have a further choice of hotels, holiday apartments and guest houses within walking distance from Gibraltar.
Accommodation Areas
The main areas in Gibraltar for hostels, hotels and holiday apartments is around the Ocean Village Marina, central district and the harbour area, although for visitors wishing to stay on the quieter eastern side of the Rock there is the choice of Caleta Hotel and Caleta Hotel Apartments. Those visiting Gibraltar on a shoestring budget will find a popular ‘wild camping' area located on waste ground just over the border in La LĂnea de la ConcepciĂłn that is more suited to caravan or motor home camping as there are no ablutions or facilities but does give the option of free accommodation. Visitors that enjoy camping but are not too keen on roughing it will find Camping Sureuropa in La LĂnea de la ConcepciĂłn that offers pitches for tents, caravans and motor homes as well as a selection of self catering bungalows.
There are further hostels, hotels and holiday apartments in the town centre and marina areas of La LĂnea and slightly further afield in San Roque. Across the Bay of Gibraltar is the port city of Algeciras where there is a wide range of accommodation options, many of the hotels offering great value and within a short drive from Gibraltar. Some visitors to Gibraltar book one or two nights stay in Algeciras in order to be close to the port for a high speed ferry day trip to Tangier in Morocco. Ferry trips are reasonably priced, take less than an hour to cross the Strait and run throughout the day, allowing passengers as much time as they like in Tangier.
Accommodation Types
On the other side of the coin from free camping near the border post are the upmarket hotels and resorts to be found in and around Gibraltar, and they don't come more luxurious that the stunning five star Sunborn Superyacht Hotel. Located in Gibraltar's fantastic Ocean Village Marina, the Sunborn offers decadent living in a choice of guest cabins, suites and their truly amazing penthouse suite. The on-board leisure facilities are equally as impressive as the accommodation choices, with an infinity pool, spa, casino and several bars and restaurants. A short drive up the coast from La LĂnea de la ConcepciĂłn is the huge purpose built residential and leisure resort known as Sotogrande that really needs to be seen to be believed. More like a large luxurious village, the resort boasts its own marinas, golf courses, sports clubs, polo clubs, tennis centres, health spas, shops, and of course five star resort hotels and homes.
Built in 1932 and probably Gibraltar's most iconic hotel, the Rock Hotel has welcomed some famous guests over the years including the much loved British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. Other more affordable accommodation in Gibraltar include a couple of smaller, less luxurious yachts in the marina, three star hotel options such as the popular Bristol Hotel that has a swimming pool (very few in Gibraltar), the Caleta Hotel self catering holiday apartments, Emile Hostel next to Grand Casemates Square, and the great value Guest House La Esteponera in the centre of La LĂnea's old town.
